What a wonderful post, and I am going to do my best to get hold of the film of Trifles you mentioned. I love Susan Glaspell's writing and am shocked that she has been left largely unpublished and unacknowledged in the 20th and 21st centuries when her novels are so spectacularly good. I remember reading Fidelity and having to take regular breaks because I was just so overwhelmed by how raw and painful her prose is.

I think what touched me most in Brook Evans was the strained mother-daughter relationship. Brook only comes to an understanding of her mother after she dies, and has no way to make amends or repair their relationship - that really broke my heart. Glaspell's sensitive portrayal of these two women and their failure to understand one another is absolutely outstanding.
